We use current ONS data. The analysis creates a balanced Gross Value Added (GVA) heat map at a local level, with detailed and comparable statistics down to LSOA 2011 Census area.

Gross value added (GVA) is a measure of the increase in the value of the economy due to the production of goods and services. For the balanced measure, GVA(B), it is measured at current basic prices (value in £ million), which include the effect of inflation, and in “real” terms in chained volume measures (CVM), with the effect of inflation removed.

We are able to extrapolate the Balanced GVA within 20 broad industry sectors and can resolve data down to LSOA level.

Industry Sectors are:

A : Agriculture

B : Mining and Quarrying

C : Manufacturing

D : Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply

E : Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities

F : Construction

G : Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

H : Transportation and Storage

I : Accommodation and food service activities

J : Information and communication

K : Financial and insurance activities

L : Real estate activities

M : Professional, scientific and technical activities

N : Administrative and support service activities

O : Public administration and defence

P : Education

Q : Human health and social work activities

R : Arts, entertainment and recreation

S : Other service activities

T : Activities of households as employers

U : Activities of extraterritorial organisations and bodies

This allows a full analysis and comparison of industry within a defined geographical area. Locational performance can be examined and highlighted, agglomeration opportunities identified through industry clustering. The interactive map below shows historica GVA/head throughout the UK (ONS data).
